Staff shortage hits tiger reserves.

WHAT IS THIS HAPPENING? New Delhi, July 28: The Sunderbans is among 15 tiger reserves with “very good” management practices, but field staff shortages and inadequate training are hampering conservation activities in all of India’s 39 tiger reserves. An exercise initiated by the Union environment ministry to assess conservation efforts in tiger reserves has dubbed the effectiveness of management as “good” in 12 reserves, satisfactory in eight, and poor in four. “But staff shortages and ageing field staff across all the reserves threaten conservation efforts,” said Vinod Mathur, dean at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. “In the absence of fresh recruitment, the ageing staff can’t even hand over their skills to the next generation,” added Mathur, who was involved in the exercise, titled “management effectiveness” evaluation of tiger reserves. Mathur said the average age of field staff was 52 years, and the shortage across all reserves could touch 30 per cen

Two tiger cubs killed in Ranthambore.

Two male tiger cubs, less then two year old, have been killed in Ranbthambore National Park. The two were found dead on boundary of Ranthambore National Park sending shock waves among tiger lovers and forcing government to constitute a committee to probe the killings. The mother of the two cubs is still missing. The bodies were found lying at a close distance, next to two bodies of goats. "We suspect it to be a case of poisioning their kill,"R.N. Mehrotra, chief wild life warden, Rajasthan told India Today. His suspects the villagers. "It appears as an act of vengeance," he said, adding "the bodies were intact." The killings appear to have taken place three-four days ago. However, local sources allege that this could well be an act of poaching as there have been reports in the past about the poachers. The bodies were found in an area that has been out of bounds for tourists. Foresters say the missing mother had abandoned the grown up cubs a few mon

Poachers Beware!!

India's Tiger Poaching Crisis Until recently, habitat loss was thought to be the largest single threat to the future of wild tigers in India. It has now been established that the trade in tiger bones, destined for use in Oriental medicine outside India's borders, is posing an even larger threat. Having decimated their own sources, Far Eastern traditional medicine manufacturers are now targeting India for their supply of tiger bones. Poaching of tigers for the traditional Chinese medicine industry started in northern India in the mid-1980's. Investigations carried out in 1993-94, during which a total of 36 tiger skins and 667 kilos (1470 pounds) of tiger bones were seized in northern India, brought to light the severity of the problem. The illegal trade is now widespread and in the hands of ruthless, sophisticated operators, some of whom have top level patronage. There is also evidence that profits from the wildlife trade are increasingly being used to fund a

It's a sad thing that our national animal is on the verge of becoming non-existent in the country. It would be a day of national shame if someday we have to go to another country to see our own national animal. Join the cause, speak up. Every bit counts. Let us do our bit to save this beautiful majestic animal who's silently losing its roar. 1411 left? We should be ashamed of ourselves if we can't protect our animals. We all saw 'Avatar' and shook our heads at those idiots at the helm of the attacking military forces. But if we act indifferent to this are we any different from those whom we criticized? Tigers are the most majestic and beautiful creatures in the forest and we cannot let this wonderful creation of Nature get destroyed like this. Please go to http://www.saveourtigers.com/ and join the roar. It's one of the most integral parts of our heritage at stake. Act now..

India India is home to the world's largest population of tigers in the wild.According to the World Wildlife Fund, of the 3,500 tigers around the world, 1,400 are found in India. Only 11% of original Indian tiger habitat remains, and it is becoming significantly fragmented and often degraded.A major concerted conservation effort, known as Project Tiger, has been underway since 1973, initially spearheaded by Indira Gandhi. The fundamental accomplishment has been the establishment of over 25 well-monitored tiger reserves in reclaimed land where human development is categorically forbidden. The program has been credited with tripling the number of wild Bengal tigers from roughly 1,200 in 1973 to over 3,500 in the 1990s. However, a tiger census carried out in 2007, whose report was published on February 12, 2008, stated that the wild tiger population in India declined by 60% to approximately 1,411.It is noted in the report that the decrease of tiger population can be attributed direct

First we will talk about The Javan Tigers. The Javan tiger ( Panthera tigris sondaica ) was limited to the Indonesian island of Java . It now seems likely that this subspecies became extinct in the 1980s, as a result of hunting and habitat destruction, but the extinction of this subspecies was extremely probable from the 1950s onwards (when it is thought that fewer than 25 tigers remained in the wild). The last confirmed specimen was sighted in 1979, but there were a few reported sightings during the 1990s.With a weight of 100–141 kg for males and 75–115 kg for females, the Javan tiger was one of the smaller subspecies, approximately the same size as the Sumatran tiger.
